· 189,000 passengers use the airport in March, up 54% on February
· Busiest day was March 31st with over 10,000 passengers
· Plans in place to cater for over 100,000 passengers over the Easter fortnight
London, UK –5 April, 2022
March saw London City Airport (LCY) deliver its best monthly passenger figures since the beginning of the pandemic.
189,000 passengers used the central London hub in March, with Amsterdam the most popular route, continuing the airport’s post pandemic rebound. This was up 54% on February and was the most successful month since March 2020.
During March, British Airways routes to Rotterdam and Nice returned and new services were launched to Luxembourg and Milan-Malpensa.
And last week, the Italian flag-carrier ITA Airways returned to LCY, operating a triple daily service into Milan Linate.
Commenting on the results the Airport’s Chief Executive, Robert Sinclair, said: “It is really pleasing to see so many passengers return to London City this past month.
Our performance has given us greater optimism for 2022 and it is clear we have an important role to play for London, both in terms of facilitating business recovery and, increasingly, inbound and outbound tourism.
We also see more opportunities for the airport as several regional routes around Europe are currently without services into London and we believe we are well placed to help better connect the capital.”
London City is gearing up for the Easter getaway, with over 100,000 passengers expected over the next fortnight.
With a new CT Scanner in place, which means passengers do not need to remove their laptops and liquids from their hand luggage, the airport still offers a fast, efficient security experience. However, with pre departure document checking still required for the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany, the airport is urging passengers to come to the airport well prepared.
Mr Sinclair added: “Travel thrives on consistency of rules, and we hope key markets around Europe can align with the processes we have here in the UK as soon as possible.
In the meantime, as we are a space constrained airport, please check you have all the right paperwork for your journey and show up just a bit earlier than normal. Rest assured that we are working with our airlines and passenger handling teams to find solutions that will make your journey as stress free as possible.”
Looking ahead for April, a new service to the Isle of Man with Loganair will commence. And in May Loganair will connect to Shetland from London City and British Airways will bring back services to Mykonos and Bergerac.
